I felt compelled to do this illustration because as an artist, things like this really upset me. We’re often given these roundabout excuses for why we aren’t depicted in the work of certain artists. I wish I could be surprised that there was some person who thought that it was acceptable to portray her in the way she was portrayed on the French Girls App. Black women are often mocked and villainized and to me the illustration she received is simply a reflection of the micro-aggression we’ve faced since white boats came ashore in Africa.
